Welcoming Carrie J. Liu: A New Voice on Our Judging Panel
We’re thrilled to welcome Carrie J. Liu as the newest member of our esteemed judging panel for this year’s festival. Carrie brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to our team, thanks to her impressive background as a production designer for music videos, film, and television.
Carrie's journey in the film industry has been marked by resilience, creativity, and a passion for storytelling. She emphasizes the importance of embracing constraints as a catalyst for creativity, stating that limitations force her to think outside the box and come up with fresh plans when faced with challenges. Her meticulous approach to creating spaces that align with the characters and their actions reflects her deep understanding of narrative and her commitment to authenticity.
Throughout her career, Carrie has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Snoop Dogg, Debbie Gibson, and Michael Bublé. Her ability to create visually compelling sets has earned her high praise and numerous opportunities. From designing Christmas movies for Tubi to working on feature films like "Most Wanted Santa" and "The Greatest of All Tina," Carrie's work spans a wide range of genres and styles.
One of Carrie's most recent and exciting projects is "The Brothers Sun," a gripping TV series featuring the talented Michelle Yeoh, set to debut on Netflix early next year. Carrie's rich cultural experience has allowed her to infuse authenticity into the sets she develops, bringing stories to life in unforgettable ways.
When asked about the key qualities that have contributed to her success, Carrie highlights communication, organization, and staying connected. Effective communication, she explains, involves skillfully expressing concepts through sketches, drawings, and color palettes, while organization is essential for managing photos and past work to cultivate an impressive portfolio. Most crucially, fostering long-lasting relationships with producers and directors has been invaluable in navigating the dynamic industry.
Reflecting on her personal journey, Carrie credits her parents' decision to enroll her in boarding schools as one of the most impactful influences on her life. The independence and confidence she cultivated during her time in boarding school have proven invaluable as she transitioned into society and embarked on the journey of building her career.
